You don’t come here planning to do nothing. It just happens here, usually by the second morning. You wake up without an alarm, make a coffee, and take it out to the deck. The valley is sitting there in front of you, the cattle are working their way across the far paddock, and the list of things you meant to do has gone quiet. The detox has begun, and you haven’t even realised. That is what a few days at Country Mile Escape does to people.
We don’t run a wellness program. There is no schedule on the fridge and no app to download. What we have is 70 acres in Flying Fox Valley, three private cottages, and enough quiet that you start to hear yourself think again.
Privacy is the luxury
There are only three cottages on the whole property: The Shay, The Aerial and The Bode, and they sit well apart. No shared driveway. No one walking past your window. You can sit on the deck in your dressing gown at 9 am with a second coffee, and there is genuinely no one to see you.
Most of our guests come from Brisbane or the Gold Coast, just over an hour down the road. They tell us the same thing: they didn’t realise how loud their normal life was until they got out here and it stopped.
The valley changes through the day
Part of doing nothing is just watching the world go by. The valley looks different at every hour. Early on there is often fog sitting low across the mountains. By mid-morning it has burned off, and you can see right across to the ranges. Late afternoon the light goes gold, and the whole paddock warms up. Then the sun drops behind the hills, and it cools off fast.
Red, one of our cows, is usually somewhere in view. The sheep keep to the paddock near The Shay. None of it runs to a timetable. You just start to notice it.
Nights you can actually see the stars
There is no town nearby throwing light into the sky, so the nights out here are properly dark. On a clear winter night, the stars are the best they get all year. Pour a drink, sit by the fire pit, and look up. One guest stayed a week last December and spent her evenings watching the super moon rise over the hills. That sort of thing is the entertainment out here, and it is plenty.
The creek, and the walks past the gate
If you do feel like moving, there is plenty within reach. The creek is about six minutes away, good for a swim or a picnic on a warm day. Past the gate, the national parks are some of the best in the State. Binna Burra is the closest to Country Mile Escape, and O’Reilly’s is taking you on a scenic drive that features some of the best views of the Scenic Rim mountains and vistas. With walks through Lamington National Park rainforest that range from a gentle half hour to a proper half-day hike. You can do as much or as little as you like and be back at the cottage by mid-afternoon with the fire on.
How to actually switch off
The honest truth is there is very little internet here, and phone reception comes and goes. We are too far out for it. Most people decide that is the best part once they settle in, but a bit of planning makes it easier:
- Download your podcasts, playlists, or a film before you leave Brisbane. As you leave the highway behind, mobile reception becomes a little patchy, one of the downfalls of escaping to the country. You will have to rely on your own for signal.
- There are card games, DVDs and magazines in the cottage. Use them.
- Stock up on food on the way in. The Canungra IGA is 15 minutes from Country Mile Escape. There is a gas cooktop, a BBQ, microwave and a good fridge, but no oven, so plan meals that suit that.
- Leave the work laptop in the car. You won’t be able to use it anyway.

Where can I go in Queensland with no WiFi?
Country Mile Escape sits on 70 acres in Flying Fox Valley in the Scenic Rim, just over an hour from Brisbane. There is no internet on the property and phone reception is intermittent, so it suits anyone who actually wants to switch off for a few days rather than just say they will.
Is there any phone reception?
It is intermittent depending on your carrier and where you stand on the property. Treat it as unreliable. Tell anyone who might need you that you will be off the grid, and download what you want before you arrive. You can always speak to Trish (the owner if you require assistance)
What is there to do without the internet?
Sit on the deck and watch the valley. Swim or picnic at the creek. Walk the property or head to Binna Burra and O’Reilly’s for the rainforest tracks. Light the fire pit after dark and look at the stars. Visit Canungra and take a stroll around town and visit the unique shops. There is no shortage of nothing to do, which is the point.
How far is it from Brisbane?
Just over an hour by car. The road in is sealed and fine for a sedan. Stock up on supplies in Canungra on the way as there are no shops nearby once you arrive.
